A new veterinary podcast exploring the science behind companion animal health has launched from the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine.

Called The Vetrospective, the series is hosted by Dr Michael Kent, professor of radiation oncology at UC Davis. The podcast features conversations with veterinary specialists who discuss the research behind common topics in small animal medicine.

While the podcast is aimed at both pet owners and veterinary professionals, many of the subjects covered will resonate with vets and veterinary nurses in practice. Episodes focus on explaining the evidence behind everyday recommendations, helping listeners better understand the science that underpins clinical guidance.

The first season launched on 3 March 2026 with three episodes available immediately, followed by weekly releases. In total, the season will include 12 episodes.

What listeners can expect

Early episodes explore familiar clinical topics including fleas and vector-borne disease, canine nutrition, and vaccination in dogs and cats. Discussions cover issues such as interpreting pet food labels, understanding flea biology and the pathogens they may transmit, and how vaccines work in companion animals.

Future episodes are expected to explore emerging areas of veterinary research including cancer immunotherapy, dog genetics, artificial intelligence in diagnostics, feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), and osteosarcoma.

The bottom line

For veterinary teams interested in the research behind common clinical conversations, The Vetrospective offers a specialist-led look at the science shaping companion animal medicine.

The Vetrospective is available on major podcast platforms, including Amazon/Audible, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and iHeartRadio.
