We know just how much work goes into preparing for your postgraduate certificate assessments. Between juggling your busy practice career, personal life and study time, the lead-up to exam day can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry – we've got your back.

I'm Claire, a veterinary nurse working at the International School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies (ISVPS), helping design qualifications and assessments that are robust, high-quality, and clinically relevant. We see over 4000 candidates worldwide take our postgraduate certificate assessments each year. To help, we put our heads together to create this friendly guide to help you feel confident and ready to pass your assessments first time.

Here are our top 7 tips to help you prepare like a pro:

Tip #1: Make your revision plan work for you

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to revision, but the most successful candidates usually start early – ideally 8–10 weeks ahead of the exam date. Rather than cramming in long days, break your revision into manageable chunks. 25-minute sessions followed by short breaks can improve concentration and help avoid burnout.

We recommend using your course syllabus as your primary guide for exam revision. This outlines exactly what could be covered in your exams and helps you target your revision where it matters most. Use the syllabus as your foundation and build on it with your course notes, recommended reading and self-directed learning. This combination gives you both depth and breadth of knowledge. Make checklists from the syllabus and tick off topics as you go – it’s a great way to track your progress and stay motivated.

Don’t be afraid to make it fun: revision flashcards, quizzes with friends or teaching the content to someone else can help reinforce your knowledge.

Tip #2: Get to know the exam platform beforehand

Our online exam platform is user-friendly, but it is always a good idea to practice before the big day. You can access interactive tutorials that simulate the platform experience within the relevant assessment pages on ISVPS Success (see tip #5). These will allow you to practice saving and flagging questions, using the timer, calculator and dictionary, and navigating between questions.

The more familiar you are with the platform, the less you will have to worry about on exam day – so be sure to give it a try!

Tip #3: Run a systems check – don’t skip this!

You’ll receive an important email with access to our Systems Check, which lets you test your exam equipment.  Make sure you are regularly checking your spam or junk folders to ensure our emails aren’t missed.

We strongly recommend running this check using the exact equipment and location you’ll be using on the day. This helps make sure your camera, microphone, and internet connection meet the requirements. We’ve seen candidates trip up on this before – don’t let it be you!

This may be a good time to pause and check you are exam day ready.  Ensure you have a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted and remove any revision notes or books from sight.

Tip #4: Know your assessment details ahead of time

The more organised you are, the calmer you’ll feel. We provide information on exam dates, submission dates and the specific assessments you’re taking in plenty of time before the end of your course.  Ensure you access your MyImprove Hub to check these and find .all of the assessment guidelines.

Read through all the information early and set reminders. A bit of planning now will save you stress later!

Tip #5: Make the most of ISVPS Success

Ensure you explore ISVPS Success! This is our dedicated support platform, designed to help you feel more confident and better prepared for your assessments. It’s packed with supplementary courses and resources tailored to the type of assessment you’re working towards.

It’s the perfect companion to your assessment guidelines – think of it as your ‘behind-the-scenes' support team!

Tip #6: Get a second pair of eyes on your written work

If you’re submitting written postgraduate certificate assessments, always ask a trusted friend or colleague to proofread them before submission. A fresh pair of eyes can catch typos, grammatical errors or unclear phrasing that you might have missed after hours of editing.

We’ve seen how a small change in wording can turn a good report into a great one – don’t underestimate the value of a second opinion.

Tip #7: Be kind to yourself and take breaks

This one isn’t about exam technique, but it’s just as important. Preparing for postgraduate certificate assessments is a mental marathon, not a sprint. Make sure you schedule in time to rest, sleep and do things that recharge you – whether it’s walking your dog, reading for pleasure or watching your favourite series.

Burnout helps no one, and a well-rested brain remembers more and performs better.
