Module Summary
01 - Blood banking and component therapy
Key Learning Objectives.
Explain donor selection, screening and blood-bank safety; blood groups and universal donors; collection, storage and component separation; component therapy, leukoreduction, infection control and blood-banking development.
02 - Blood products, product management and whole blood collection
Key Learning Objectives:
Compare whole blood, red-cell, plasma, platelet and albumin products, including indications, storage and shelf life; explain traceability, donor collection and care, and safe donation volumes.
03 - Erythrocyte antigens and the immune system
Key Learning Objectives
Explain canine and feline erythrocyte antigens, antibodies and sensitisation; blood typing, neonatal isoerythrolysis, major and minor cross-matching, compatible unit selection and owner discharge information.
04 - Anaemia
Key Learning Objectives
Explain erythropoiesis and red-cell indices and morphology; diagnose and classify anaemia, interpret blood smears and clinical findings, and discuss IMHA, hypoplastic anaemia and transfusion considerations.
05 - Haemostasis and common coagulation abnormalities
Key Learning Objectives
Explain platelet function and coagulation pathways; recognise hereditary and acquired coagulopathies; collect samples, describe common coagulation tests and outline nursing considerations.
06 - Transfusion considerations and blood product administration
Key Learning Objectives
Assess when and how to transfuse; prepare products and recipients; calculate and administer whole blood, red cells and plasma; monitor patients and plan cryoprecipitate delivery.
07 - Adverse transfusion reactions
Key Learning Objectives
Differentiate acute and delayed, immune and non-immune transfusion reactions; recognise causes and signs, reduce risk, manage reactions and complete appropriate investigation and reporting.
08 - Autotransfusions, cell salvage, xenotransfusions and transfusion in other species
Key Learning Objectives
Describe autotransfusion for haemoperitoneum and haemothorax, including equipment, PCV and contraindications; compare donor blood, outline cell salvage and xenotransfusion, and discuss transfusion compatibility in other species.
Qualifications
Veterinary Technician Certificate (VTCert)
This course is accredited by ISVPS and allows you to achieve a Veterinary Technician Certificate
To attain the NCert qualification, you must be able to prove your eligibility by either uploading your veterinary nursing qualification certificate or RCVS/VCI number to Improve once you have booked onto your programme of study. To attain the VPPCert candidates must be pass the eligibility criteria as set by ISVPS. Please see eligibility criteria tab.
