Vets around the World – Chris

23 August 2023 -

Hi I am Charalampos from Cyprus, I am a Veterinary Clinical Pathologist currently based at Malawi, and lucky enough to have worked/studied in 6 different countries.
I studied veterinary medicine at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and during my undergraduate studies I did a Wellcome Trust internship at Cambridge University UK where I caught the research bug. Following that I worked for 3 years in 1st and 2nd opinion vet clinical at Cyprus before heading to Bristol University for my internship. During that time, I also completed a research project at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
The Royal Veterinary College, University of London, was my next stop where I did my veterinary clinical pathology residency and got the chance to do an externship at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, California. After becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathology and since I had a real passion for research and infectious diseases, I was awarded the prestigious Clinical PhD Fellowship from Wellcome Trust.
This fellowship brought me initially to Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and now at Malawi where I have set up my project studying the role of neutrophils in the pathogenesis of cerebral malaria in children.
Undoubtedly my career path is not the most common for a veterinarian but defiantly gave me loads of amazing experiences and taught me to think outside the box. I would urge every veterinarian, especially right after graduation or even before, to travel in a different country for an Erasmus, training or work experience.
