World Vet Day: Why Did You Become A Vet?
This year for World Vet Day, we looked to our staff to share many of the touching reasons why they first became vets. The testimonies include words from CEO Heber Alves and one of our founders, David Babington.
The Improve International Group was created in 1998 to make CPD more accessible to veterinary professionals. Although many of our founders were vets with shared interests, their origins were very different.
David Babington, one of its founders and now Academic and Digital Product Development Director, said: “I realised I wanted to be a vet around 12 years of age. I had been inspired by the books of James Herriot and the popular TV series depicting life as a vet in the Yorkshire Dales. I arranged to visit the local practice, spent time with the large animal vets driving out to farms treating cattle, sheep and horses. This cemented the dream.
“I eventually secured a place at the Royal Veterinary College, then followed five years of working hard and playing hard to gain the coveted membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. I was finally a real vet!”
CEO Heber Alves, originally from Brazil, explained: “I have always loved animals, but more importantly, I recognised the many problems related to animal welfare around the world, and I felt that I could make a difference. Animals play a crucial role in human happiness, and I wanted to contribute to making the world a better place through compassionate care.”
Melanie Almeida, Professional Development Advisor in Portugal said: “Ever since I can remember, I have been curious and fascinated about animals and how to take care of them. I’ve always loved animals and medicine, and wanted to become a vet to help pet owners understand their pets better and contribute to their wellbeing.”
