Carry on reading for a case study – more free vet nurse CPD in diagnostic imaging

For vet nurses, diagnostic imaging is as much about radiography than ultrasound. We’ve put together this diagnostic imaging case study to help you test your diagnostic imaging knowledge. Remember, this counts as CPD too!

Can you help Walter?

Meet Walter! He is a 5-year-old, male neutered Labrador with long intermittent history of lower urinary tract disease, pollakiuria, occasional stranguria and haematuria. The dog presented out of-hours with stranguria, straining and haematuria. He has been treated for cystitis several times but never had a full workup of the urinary tract.

Walter was sedated and underwent an abdominal ultrasound which showed a markedly distended bladder with multiple cystoliths which was most likely causing an obstruction.

An attempt of placement of a urinary catheter was made but unsuccessful. The dog is anaesthetised, and you are asked to prepare the X-ray room for abdominal radiographs, retrograde urethrocystogram and assist in the positioning of the patient.

Test yourself:

  1. Where will be the centring for this radiograph?
  2. Which views should be taken?
  3. Why do you think a retrograde urethrocystogram should be performed?
  4. Which type of contrast can be used?
  5. What things should be considered when performing this type of procedure for patient and personal safety?
