The Advanced Certificate in Surgical Nursing modular veterinary nurse CPD programme is designed for those wanting to advance their surgical skills and build on the knowledge gained in the NCert in Surgical Nursing. In completing the programme, you will cover more advanced surgical techniques and complex clinical cases, be able to manage a theatre suite, consider all of the elements that impact patients, staff, and infection control, and improve your practice standards with audit and reflection.
What you’ll learn...

The programme starts with the management of the surgical suite and would provide expert knowledge for an RVN who is interested in progressing into a specialised surgical management role.

The modules encourage evaluation and reflection of the current theatre guidelines, protocols, and systems in your practice and implementing changes as required.

The importance of surgical day planning, preparation, and communication in order to work most effectively are discussed, alongside current antibiotic guidelines and the concept of a biofilm with the infection control aspect of theatre maintenance covered from a sustainability perspective.

Specific areas of surgery; thoracic, abdominal, neurological, airway, PSS, etc. looking at the pre-, peri, and post-operative considerations for each of these.

While also including information on stabilisation prior to surgery, the use of ventilators, chest and wound drains, bone grafting, nerve blocks, and post-op monitoring amongst other aspects of surgical nursing involvement.

Understanding pre-requisites
Although no prerequisite is required to join the Nurse Advanced Certificate training programme and achieve its associated ISVPS (International School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies) qualification, it is strongly recommended that delegates considering enrolling in the programme:

Have previously achieved an ISVPS NCert in Surgical Nursing (or its academic equivalent),
or

Have 5+ years’ experience in general practiceas a Veterinary Nurse. So that you are confident in your knowledge of common surgical procedures and have an appreciation of resource material from where further research can be undertaken into more unusual conditions and/or situations. An understanding of normal anatomy and physiology, and how these impact on the pathogenesis and surgical treatment of various conditions will be also expected.
