An interview with Jennifer Duxbury, last year’s Louise O’Dwyer Scholarship recipient

19 June 2025 -

As we launch the next round of applications for the Louise O’Dwyer Scholarship, we caught up with last year’s winner, Jennifer Duxbury FdSc RVN, to hear how the ECC programme has shaped her journey so far. Passionate, determined, and humble, Jennifer embodies everything this scholarship stands for – and her story is nothing short of inspiring.

How did you feel when you found out you’d been awarded the scholarship?

“I was honoured to be chosen. It really meant a lot to me. I was keen to get stuck into the course straight away!”

You’re now three-quarters of the way through the ECC Nurse Certificate programme – how’s it going?

“I’m absolutely loving the course. It’s a lot of information, but I’m thoroughly enjoying learning everything and starting to implement that knowledge in practice. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the difference it’s making with my patients.”

What has the experience been like, day to day, in your role as a nurse?

“The course is very thorough and a real challenge, but it’s taught me so much already. My abilities as a nurse are improving every day, and my career feels more rewarding than ever. I now feel much more confident nursing critical patients and recognising complications early so I can act fast and improve outcomes.”

Would you recommend the ECC Certificate programme and the scholarship to other nurses?

“Absolutely. The knowledge you gain is exceptional. I’d highly recommend the ECC course to all veterinary nurses – it’s made me a better nurse, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity this scholarship has given me.”

Jennifer’s growth and enthusiasm reflect the true spirit of the Louise O’Dwyer Scholarship: empowering nurses to push their limits, grow their confidence, and deliver the very best care in ECC settings.

Now it’s your turn!

Applications for the 2025 Louise O’Dwyer Scholarship are now open. If you’re a veterinary nurse passionate about emergency and critical care, don’t miss this chance to advance your career and honour Louise’s incredible legacy.
