Overview
This two-day Dentistry and Oral Surgery - Dental Extractions course offers a mix of lectures and hands-on practice focused on dental extractions in dogs and cats. Participants will learn key techniques for oral examinations, radiography, and basic periodontal surgery.
The course emphasizes both simple and complex tooth extractions, covering multi-rooted teeth, managing complications, and effective suturing techniques.
With practical labs using cadaver heads, attendees will gain valuable experience in radiographic positioning, extraction procedures, and wound closure, making it ideal for vets seeking to enhance their dental surgery skills.
Modules
01 - Dental Examination, Radiography, and Periodontal Disease Management
Morning Lecture (3 hours):
1. Comprehensive Oral Examination & Simple Extraction Techniques (1 hour)
A systematic approach to oral examination in conscious and anaesthetized patients.
Identifying oral cavity abnormalities: gingival changes, masses, tooth fractures, resorptive lesions, inflammatory oral diseases, etc.
Oral examination tools and simple extraction techniques.
2. Dental Radiography Positioning and Interpretation (1 hour)
Advanced concepts in dental radiography.
Identifying key radiographic findings: bone loss, periapical pathology, tooth resorption.
Radiographic differentiation of normal vs. abnormal anatomy in dogs and cats.
3. Laboratory: Oral Examination on Cadaver Heads (1 hour)
Practice performing thorough oral examinations on cadaver heads (both canine and feline).
Identification of anatomical structures, pathology, and charting findings.
Afternoon Laboratory Session (3 hours):
1. Radiographic Positioning and Interpretation (1.5 hours)
Hands-on practice taking intraoral radiographs of canine and feline cadaver heads.
Reviewing and interpreting the images, discussing abnormal findings, and evaluating the quality of images.
2. Basic Periodontal Surgery Techniques (30 minutes)
Introduction to flap creation and suturing techniques.
Discuss periodontal instrumentation for deeper cleaning in advanced periodontal disease.
3. Simple Extractions (1 hour)
Demonstrate elevation of the mucogingival envelope flap.
Perform safe, simple extractions of single-rooted teeth.
02 - Tooth Extractions and Advanced Dental Procedures
Morning Lecture (3 hours):
1. Extraction Principles in Dogs and Cats (1 hour)
Indications for extractions in veterinary dentistry.
A step-by-step approach to extractions (simple and surgical).
Instrument selection and handling during extractions.
Managing extraction complications (root fractures, hemorrhage, etc.).
2. Surgical Techniques for Complex Extractions (1 hour)
Techniques for multi-rooted tooth extractions.
Discussion on regional nerve blocks: indications, techniques, and agents.
Post-extraction care and recovery.
3. Understanding Home Dental Product Recommendation Strategies (1 hour)
Developing a systematic method for evaluating the efficacy of home dental care products and techniques
Afternoon Laboratory Session (3 hours):
1. Tooth Extraction on Canine Cadaver Heads (1.5 hours)
Hands-on practice of simple and surgical extractions on dog cadaver heads.
Techniques for sectioning multi-rooted teeth and flap creation.
Techniques for closing oronasal fistulas
Handling root tip retrieval in case of fractured roots.
2. Tooth Extraction on Feline Cadaver Heads (1 hour)
Practice extractions in cat cadaver head, focusing on feline-specific conditions such as tooth resorption.
Managing extraction complications specific to cats.
3. Suturing and Wound Closure (30 minutes)
Suturing techniques for oral wounds post-extraction.
Appropriate suture materials and techniques for optimal healing.
