Enhance your Veterinary skills with the Ultrasound programme
Technological developments in recent years have led to rapid advances in veterinary ultrasonography. Meanwhile, the importance of echography and echocardiography examinations in veterinary medicine has also grown as these techniques offer the accurate diagnosis required to support a successful surgical or therapeutic intervention. This programme comprises a complete ecographic protocol, focusing on thoracic and abdominal ultrasound examinations and echocardiography.
Numbers are strictly limited to ensure that each delegate has sufficient opportunity to discuss content with the lecturer and to practice using the equipment during the practical sessions.

Qualifications
The Ultrasound programme is provided by Improve Veterinary Education in collaboration with the International School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies (ISVPS).
Complete all modules and be eligible to apply for the General Practitioner Certificate (GPCert) in by purchasing and passing the required assessments with the International School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies (ISVPS).
The fees DO NOT include registration and exam fees to achieve a General Practitioner Certificate (GPCert) from ISVPS. If you intend to pursue this route, please contact ISVPS at english@isvps.org.

01 - Ultrasonography I, Part I: Introduction to Ultrasonography
- Physics and principles of ultrasonography;
- Ultrasound machine and transducers, machine controls, criteria when choosing an ultrasound machine;
- Artefacts;
- Preparing patient and machine; Liver, gallbladder, hepatic vasculature and spleen (anatomical localisation, physiological appearance, main diseases, pathological changes in appearance), vascular markers.
02 - Ultrasonography I, Part II: Gastrointestinal tract, Liver, Spleen, Pancreas
- Gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and lymph nodes (anatomical localisation, physiological appearance, main diseases, pathological changes in appearance), vascular markers;
- Urinary tract, adrenal glands and male and female reproductive system (anatomical localisation, physiological appearance, main diseases, pathological changes in appearance), vascular markers, pregnancy examination.
03 - Ultrasonography I, Part III: Lymph nodes, Urinary tract, Reproductive tract
- Pattern recognition on ultrasound - Liver, gallbladder, hepatic vasculature and spleen, Gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, urinary tract, adrenal glands and male and female reproductive system.
- Complete abdominal protocol on vascular markers and anatomical localization.

- Sonographic presentation of portal vein caudal vena cava and aorta
- Introduction of Doppler techniques (Colour, PW and CW), how to use it for abdominal ultrasonography, semiquantitative indices, resistive Index (RI), pulsatility index (PI)
- Applications: RI and PI of kidneys and lymph nodes, aortic thromboembolism, diagnosis of portal hypertension, basic techniques to identify a portosystemic shunt

14 - Echocardiography I Part II: M and B Mode echocardiography protocols
- The usefulness of the M mode. Use, applications and main errors. Standardization of cuts and artefacts that affect measurements.
- Measurements and cardiac indexes (ratios, shortening fraction, ejection fraction, …). Clinical utility in diagnostics and follow-up of the main cardiac diseases in dogs and cats.
- Right side and M mode (cuts and measurements).
- Systematic in the ecocardio protocol (cuts, measurements and indexes).
- B mode complete protocol in the dog.
15 - Echocardiography II Part I: Doppler, Diagnosis and follow-up of acquired diseases I
- Doppler settings in cardiology;
- Doppler types, coloured, CW-doppler and PW-doppler;
- Valvulopathies in dogs, therapeutic approach to pathologies of the mitral valve (ACVIM Consensus Statement);
- Evaluate Valves, blood volume and speed, diagnostic protocol and monitoring; Endocardiosis and Endocarditis;
- Pericardial pathologies and cardiac tumours.
16 - Echocardiography II Part II: Doppler, Diagnosis and follow-up of acquired diseases II
- Dilated cardiomyopathy;
- European guidelines about echocardiographical diagnosis and prognosis;
- Feline cardiomyopathy – diagnostic approach Pulmonary hypertension, heartworms; Complete diagnostic protocol of dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, assessment of pulmonary hypertension.
