Small Animal Ultrasound

Build on your existing ultrasound knowledge and unlock your full potential 

This practical and theoretical programme consists of 12 modules and will equip you with an in-depth knowledge of advanced ultrasound applications. Your clinical decision-making proficiency will be strengthened through advanced learning in ultrasound examination findings in specific disease entities, and a focus on communication of relevant differential diagnoses and prognostic factors. You will gain in-depth confidence in performing advanced applications of ultrasound in abdominal, musculoskeletal, thoracic and neck examinations, as well as ultrasound-guided tissue sampling and injection techniques. Elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound will be introduced for use in clinical practice. 

This training will also enable you to achieve a General Practitioner Advanced Certificate in Ultrasound (GPAdvCert(US)) awarded by the International School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies (ISVPS).

What does the programme include? 

Each module is taught by experienced veterinary specialists, with multiple practical sessions in diagnostic ultrasound to help develop these skills. Some of the topics include: 

• Advanced abdominal and Doppler ultrasound  

• Clinical decision-making and producing reports 

• Ultrasound-guided tissue sampling and injection techniques  

• Ultrasonographic approach for the patient with vomiting, diarrhoea or GI bleeding

• Ultrasonography of the emergency patient

This advanced programme has been designed for those wanting to explore and expand their previous skills and gain a better insight into the world of ultrasound.  

Whether you want to enhance your skills as a general practitioner (we recommend five years in practice) or want to build on the knowledge gained from previous postgraduate training, such as diagnostic imaging, this programme is for you. 

Which advanced techniques can you learn? 

Our advanced programmes are designed for veterinary surgeons who wish to deepen their knowledge in a particular subject. Examples of several skills covered in this advanced course include: 

• Ultrasonographic approach to relevant abdominal vessels 

• Critical analysis of ultrasound findings

• Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration and biopsy techniques for abdominal, thoracic and retrobulbar applications

• New techniques in ultrasound (3D, ultrasound contrast media and elastography) 

This advanced training will also cover numerous medical areas, including: 

• Advanced abdominal ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound

• Ultrasound-guided tissue sampling and injection techniques

• Ultrasonographic approach for PU/PD patient

• Ultrasonography of the emergency patient  

• Interpreting and using ultrasonography for the musculoskeletal system and neck
